El rock ecléctico de los Cake surgió en 1995, cuando Capricorn lanzó su álbum debut, Motorcade Of Generosity. Esta banda de Sacramento incluía originalmente al guitarrista Greg Brown, al bajista Victor Damiani, al trompetista Vince di Fiore, al cantante y guitarrista John McCrea y al baterista Todd Roper. En 1996 los Cake consiguieron su primer hit con "The Distance", que logró llevar al álbum Fashion Nugget a disco de platino. Los Cake, formados por McCrea, Di Fiore, Roper, el guitarrista Xan McCurdy y el bajista Gabe Nelson, salieron de gira dos años más tarde para promocionar su tercer álbum, Prolonging the Magic, logrando un hit con "Never There". En el 2000 la banda firmó contrato con Columbia, y un álbum de grandes éxitos fue lanzado a fines de ese año.
